Digital Waste Tracking 2026

Get ready for new UK digital waste tracking laws.

Mandatory Digital Waste Tracking starts October 2026. Discover what’s changing, who’s first and how to stay ahead.

Digital Waste Tracking (DWT) isn’t just another box to tick – it’s a fundamental shift in how waste will be tracked across the UK. From October 2026, every permitted/licenced waste-receiving site must submit data digitally. Producing sites also need to take note.

TrackerSack’s granular data will get you compliance-ready way ahead of schedule, avoiding last-minute scrambles, lost tenders or even penalties.

Here’s everything you need to know.

What is DWT?

DWT replaces paper forms, spreadsheets, averages and estimates with a national digital record of all waste movements. There needs to be a transparent, auditable chain of custody.

Who has to comply?

DWT applies to receiving sites first. To make this possible producers should supply clean, structured data to contractors to keep the chain compliant.

FMs & Multi-tenant sites

As producers, you may need to evidence tenant-level usage & contamination.

Healthcare sites

Your contractors will expect ward-level, audit-grade producer data.

Waste Management

Receiving sites have a legal duty to submit DWT data from October 2026.

Why is DWT happening (& when)?

The government’s goals:

  • Cut waste crime & illegal dumping
  • Improve recycling rates & contamination control
  • Provide consistent, auditable data for ESG & reporting

In terms of timelines: voluntary pilots are already underway with selected waste companies and councils. Wider testing will follow before the end of 2025.

Full rollout starts October 2026, making DWT mandatory for all permitted / licenced waste-receiving sites.
